Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Once you have proven yourself by assisting House Hlaalu in its hostile takeover of the East Empire Company, the Vizier will lay out the situation to you plainly: If you wish to stand any chance at becoming Grandmaster of House Hlaalu, the house will need to be internally unified, and, due to their outsized influence on House politics, that means dealing with the Camonna Tong. The Tong hate all outlanders and outlander influence in Dunmer culture, so your only choices are to either eliminate them or attempt to find a compromise with them. Either way, they won't support an outlander right out of the gate, so the first step is to deal with the Camonna Tong's kingpin, the Dren family's own Orvas Dren.

Dealing with Orvas Dren[edit]

Travel to the Imperial fortress of Ebonheart on Vvardenfell and go to the Grand Council Chambers to talk to Duke Vedam Dren, Duke of Vvardenfell and brother of Orvas Dren. Vedam will tell you the same thing the Vizier did; that, if you wish to stand any chance at becoming Grandmaster, you must deal with his brother. Only after that will Vedam be able to support you. Being family, he earnestly requests you try to reason with Orvas, but regardless warns you that your choice will permanently decide your disposition towards the Camonna Tong.

What follows is an important decision, and a key difference from vanilla's version of this quest: as Duke Dren says, how you choose to deal with Orvas will determine which of two paths you proceed along to become Grandmaster.

By killing Orvas Dren, you are declaring war on the Camonna Tong, and will be required to wipe them out in order to secure your power base in Hlaalu territory.

On the other hand, by making a deal with Orvas Dren, you are pledging yourself to cooperate with the Camonna Tong and assist them in fortifying their position in exchange for their support to become Grandmaster.

Note that, if you have already completed the quest Hlaalu Hortator, your choice from that quest, whether you killed him or made a deal with him then, will carry over to this one.

Anti-Camonna Tong Path — Destroy the Camonna Tong![edit]

To take the anti-CT path, all you must do is kill Orvas Dren. This is not quite as easy as it sounds, as he wears a near-full set of Orcish armor and carries an ebony spear. However, he is not immensely high level, clocking in at only level 18, so he shouldn't be a major problem for a character that has already attained the rank of Councilman. You can just attack him, but that risks incurring the wrath of the much more intimidating Galos Farethi, Dren's bodyguard, a level 28 Warrior wielding a Daedric katana. To get him to attack, you can instead intimdate him until you succeed. Upon a successful intimidation, he will proclaim, "No %PCRace can intimidate me!" and attack. Alternatively, you can simply taunt him or use a Frenzy Humanoid spell to raise his Fight value until he attacks unprovoked.

Pro-Camonna Tong Path — The Grand Compromise[edit]

To take the pro-CT path, you must find some way to convince Orvas Dren to work with you. Like vanilla, this can be done in two ways. The easiest way is to simply raise his disposition. When you talk to him about Camonna Tong, select the option, "Together House Hlaalu and the Camonna Tong will both prosper." As long as his disposition is 80 or greater, he will agree to work with you. If you instead want to try something a little less conventional, you can blackmail him. The blackmail in question is called Dren's Note], located in a level 75 locked and trapped chest in the basement of the Dren villa. Beware that, unless you have some form of invisbility, to obtain this blackmail means you must face off against Dren's hitmen, Navil and Ranes Ienith, who aren't pushovers themselves. Regardless, with the blackmail, you'll gain an additional dialogue choice, "I have some papers I believe you should see.", which you can select to convince Orvas to work with you regardless of disposition.

Next Moves[edit]

Regardless of how you've dealt with Orvas Dren, return to Duke Vedam Dren to hear what he has to say. He'll be disappointed if you killed his brother, but will wonder if it perhaps was necessary for House Hlaalu for him to die. If you compromised with him, he will be very surprised indeed, and will not ask questions about how you did so, merely stating that he hopes you use your newfound power with wisdom and compassion.

After talking to Vedam, return to the Vizier and give him the news. As a reward, you'll receive the Crystalline Sigil of the Hlaalu, a unique amulet created for Grandmaster Athires Hlaalu which allows the wearer to teleport to the Second Family Manor in Narsis at any time.

Your next assignment from the Vizier depends on how you chose to deal with Orvas Dren: killing him has you working against the Camonna Tong in the quest "Crackdown," while making a deal with him has you assisting the Tong in "Expel the Outlanders."

Notes[edit]

  • This quest is essentially a wrapper for the vanilla quest of the same name (see Dealing with Orvas DrenMW). This is why you must speak to Vedam Dren before you can complete the quest. The vanilla quest's behavior is mostly intact, but its beginning and end results are overriden and scripted differently to work with the TR House Hlaalu end-cap questline.
  • Current Grandmaster Athires Hlaalu has some cryptic advice about dealing with Orvas Dren. Speaking to him about little secret with at least 60 disposition will grant you the response:
    • "Orvas Dren casts three shadows. If ever you are on Vvardenfell and must deal with the man, do not think his armor is his only defense."
