Lore:Lodestone
This article is about the metal. For the lyre also called the Lodestone, see Callisos' Lodestone.
Lodestones are metals with strong magnetic energy. They can attract dust, debris, and other metals like iron.[1][2][3] They are commonly used for navigation, especially as compasses for sea travel.[4][5] Lodestones can also manipulate electricity and its associated magic. The Maormer, who often travel the sea and use storm magic, use lodestones for several functions.[6][7] But lodestones can also have magical properties. Enchanted lodestones can focus magicka over a distance and usually come in pairs to form sympathetic links between them. They can also be focused for navigation spells[8] and through the links, trace each other's location.[9] Lodestones are also used in alchemy and can enhance one's jumping abilities.[10]
Waystones are magical, crystalline balls of stone that the Aldmer of the mid-Merethic Era and even Dawn Era used for sea travel. Throughout history, archaeologists have discovered these pieces across ancient Aldmeri shipwrecks and docks and were left to theorize their functions. In was not until as recent as the late Third Era,[Note 1] that people realized they tend to rotate on an axis in a specific direction. Though modern-day historians are still left wondering how they work, they know they are attuned to an unknown power. There are three kinds of waystones. Ones that point southward, northwest, and northeast. Topal the Pilot used a waystone that pointed northeast from the Summerset Isles to eventually discover Tamriel.[11][12]
The All Flags Navy used enchanted lodestones to navigate to the Sea of Pearls and keep numerous ships in formation and on course.[13] The druids of the Firesong Circle create rough-hewn lodestone compasses that always point to their home island, Y'ffelon.[14] Similarly, some people enchant talismans to always point to Oldgate in Rivenspire.[15]
The Tarnished of Slag Town, the slums in the Brass Fortress use artificial lodestones to find metal scraps and metallic threads to make anything from clothing and air filters.[16] Storm Atronachs can drop lodestones crackling with lightning. Adventurers tend to collect them as trophies.[17] Aetheric Lodestones are extremely rare and come in the form of a perfectly round orb threaded with Aetherium.[1]
