Pangrits are bipedal marine creatures, described as resembling a cross between a guar and a shark. They are native to islands of the Padomaic Ocean, being found primarily in the Systres Archipelago and the island of Solstice.[1] They are known to posses chitinous scales on parts of their body.[2]
The origins of Pangrits is unknown. Some believe pangrit were creations of the Hadolids,[3] who are by far the most prolific race to tame and train them; often keeping their company and using them as beasts of warfare and burden.[4][5] Others refute this idea, citing the animal's lack of meaningful intelligence as proof they are naturally occurring, or at least were simply found by hadolids.[3]
Behavior and Reproduction[edit]
They are known to reproduce by laying eggs. The eggs are lain in clutches averaging around four, and are housed in nests built on the shoreline, often constructed from fallen palm fronds and other plant material. Pairs of pangrits have been observed guarding these nests.[6] Their young are known as 'Nymphlings', and their hides are described as being soft like velvet.[7]
They often live in company of other pangrit, which dig themselves dens not far from the shoreline. While their Nymphlings are skittish, adult pangrit will defend themselves vigorously. They have been observed biting with their sharp teeth, leaping to rake with their back claws, and emitting painful vocalizations. As for their diet, they have been observed eating kelp and beach grasses.[8] Despite their bulk, they are powerful swimmers, and can even tow rafts.[9]
Variants[edit]
There are several known breeds of pangrit, by far the most common being the Turquoise Pangrit.[3] Other breeds include the combative Scarlet,[10] and well-camouflaged Striped Pangrits.[11]
Pangrit that are large enough to ride are called War Pangrit, and the shell plates that grow on their backs are used in place of conventional saddles.[3]
Uses[edit]
Pangrit themselves are edible, and have been noted to pair well with honey.[1] Pangrit saliva possesses useful waterproofing qualities.[12] While wild pangrit are aggressive, they respond surprisingly well to domestication, and are easy to train.[1] Though not the smartest of beasts, pangrit are known to be very sociable with and loyal to their owners, just as they are with other pangrits; communicating when they want something by poking, cuddling under blankets, and defending their owners when attacked.[3][11][10]
