Lore:Rune-Language

The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995

The unnamed rune-language is that which is inscribed in its own alphabet upon the magical, enigmatic runestones that once littered Tamriel[1] and the realms of Oblivion.[2] It is not derived from any known historic or pre-Dawn culture.[3] Runes have specific, measurable meanings and serve as a common language among enchanters that allow them to repeatably imbue items with mystical properties.[4]

Notes[edit]

  • These runes were removed from the game and have the same translations as Odra and Taderi respectively.
  • According to early developer commentary, the rune-language was going to be heavily featured in ESO's cut spellcrafting mechanic, having been manipulated by a culture that no one has ever heard which operated sometime in Tamriel's distant past; the culture maintained a network of classrooms across Tamriel, which contained runestone tablets used for the crafting of spells.[UOL 1]
  • The "Runic Accord" was a historical event during the First Era that took place some years after Archmagus Shalidor founded the College of Winterhold, and was attributed to a contemporary Arch-Mage of the College at the time.[UOL 2] Whether or not the Runic Accord was related to the rune-language is unknown.
  • The runes used by Arcanists are wholly unrelated to this runic language.[4]
