This article is about the prophet active during the Third Era. For the prophet active during the Second Era, see Varen Aquilarios.

The Prophet, also known as the Holy Hermit of Anvil,[1] was a prophet of unknown identity who came to the limelight in 3E 433 as he preached a message about the terrible half-Elf Umaril the Unfeathered, returning to the affairs of man. After an attack on the Chapel of Dibella in Anvil that saw the altars desecrated and the priests killed, the Hero of Kvatch came to investigate.[2]

The Hero spoke with the Prophet who informed them that Umaril the Unfeathered had returned to take vengeance on the Divines whose champion Pelinal Whitestrake, the Divine Crusader served as Umaril and his Ayleid Empire's undoing. The Prophet said the Divines required a Divine Crusader reborn. Someone who could complete Pelinal's unfinished work of destroying Umaril utterly. To do so, the Prophet sent the Hero of Kvatch on a pilgrimage to find the eight scattered Crusader's Relics, the holy arms and armor of Pelinal, gifted to him by the Divines.[3]

After a pilgrimage that led to the Hero meeting Pelinal's ghost face to face, and acquiring all of the Relics, the Prophet arrived to assist further. The Prophet informed the Hero that unlike Pelinal, they could face Umaril with a final Divine blessing, that of Talos who changed the face of Divine upon ascension. This blessing could allow the Hero of Kvatch to follow Umaril into the spirit realm and destroy him once and for all.[3] The Prophet was able to confer this blessing to the Hero, attesting to their connection to the Divine. With this, and parting words of wisdom, the Prophet sent the Hero of Kvatch and their fellow questing knights on their way.[4]

The Hero arrived to Garlas Malatar, defeated Umaril's physical form, used the Blessing of Talos, to follow him into the spirit realm, and destroyed him utterly.[5]

The Prophet was never officially endorsed by the Church, with many having believed him to be crazy, but his teachings were also believed by many within the Church or not to hold truth.[1][6] His mysterious entry and departure from the scene around the return and fall of Umaril, along with no known name makes his identity very murky. However, he was familiar with former Archmage of the Mages Guild Hannibal Traven.[3]

The Prophet was versed in a wide array of topics of metaphysical and historical significance. He ruminated on things such as the nature of Pelinal and Umaril, the Enantiomorph of Tiber Septim and Zurin Arctus, the Dragonborn nature of Alessia, Reman, and Tiber Septim, and the Divines themselves. He could even sense the oversoul of Emperors within the Amulet of Kings when it was within his proximity.[3] Further, he would cite various heresies said to have been forbidden by the Amulet of Kings.[nb 1]
