When you first talk to Gathaval after arriving on Solstice:

"If I had a spare coin, I'd toss it to the bard and ask them to play something—anything!—that wasn't about the damn High Elves."

"I'm trying to keep a low profile. If the innkeep catches me loitering again, he'll toss me out on my scrawny arse!"

After the events of The Regent of Sunport, Gathaval will thank you:

"You were part of that awful fight against the Worm Cult, weren't you? Then you have my thanks. Maybe the gratitude of a simple commoner isn't worth much, but it's yours all the same."

"I don't have much to call my own, friend. But thanks to you and the Stirk Fellowship, at least I've got my life. Now if I can just find a coin or two, maybe this will be the day I turn my fortunes around!"
