A Step Back in Time

After receiving news that Alana's team has been overwhelmed by Alessian forces at Faolchu's lair, you will find Hanil with a few surviving Direnni Knights outside the lair:

"There were too many of them. They tore us apart ….
Captain, I have bad news. Commander Parmion is dead."

What happened?

"Commander Parmion decided to accompany us, but it was a trap. We expected to find Faolchu and his officers, but there was a whole platoon waiting for us.
We couldn't stop them. The commander fought bravely, but they cut him down and took Alana."

The Nameless Soldier

If you exit out of the conversation and didn't pick up quest, he will exclaim:

"There were so many of them!"

Speaking to him:

"I'm afraid there isn't much time.
We expect Faolchu to launch a full-scale assault at any moment."

What do you recommend?

"It's a tough choice. I think there are enough of us left alive to go after Faolchu, but we also need to rescue Alana. I don't know ….
What are your orders, Captain?"

I guess I need to decide.

You will need to make a decision whether to focus on having the soldiers take on Faolchu in order to save Alana or taking on Faolchu by yourself while your allies are trying to save her:

"This isn't an easy choice, I know. I don't envy you.
But whatever you decide, we're with you."

Take the soldiers and kill Faolchu. I'll rescue Alana.

"Yes, Captain.
They dragged Alana up the path behind me. Good luck. We'll get Faolchu for you."

I'll deal with Faolchu. See if you can find Alana.

"Very well, Captain. I'll send one of our soldiers with you. She'll meet you inside."

If you chose to find Alana and speak with him again, he'll say:

"Go, find Alana. We'll deal with Faolchu, once and for all."

If you choose to kill Faolchu and speak with him again, he'll say:

"My best knight will meet you inside. We'll save Alana, don't you worry.
Good luck, Captain."

If you choose to rescue Alana first, Hanil and the rest of the Direnni knights will run to fight Faolchu, but presumably perished.
