Outcomes[edit]

What are the outcomes of killing either side?

Does it affect any other quests or story?

Thanx in advance! — Unsigned comment by 76.1.165.125 (talk) at 23:21 on 5 April 2007

Didn't affect anything for me. Anyone else having trouble getting the female Khajit (the demented one) killed without getting a bounty? I can kill every other demented but when I try to kill her, I get an instant bounty, even if I do so when she's sleeping and the male Khajit in her house has been killed. Also, I don't think the order presented in the article matters.--74.122.192.40 17:29, 3 May 2007 (EDT)
Well, since I didn't feel like spending more than 15 mins for this quest, I just talked to the Demented who was right in front of me and agreed to kill all the Manics. Well, I did, no bounty, no assault, no theft, and of course no murder. All of them died in their homes and I even removed all the evidence (Cursed Mage's Hood etc.) BUT when I was done, there were Golden Saints everywhere (but since there is no record that I was ever involved, the Saints just ran around in circles.) When I went to get my reward it was 600 G at level 37. And half of the Demented insulted me and told me to leave. I check their disposition; all at 100. Some of them now imply that they miss their double and I'm a monster for killing them. (Rather expected response from the Demented however.) I never really understood the point of this quest so I never started it or visited the town until level 35 but I guess now I understand the meaning behind this quest. You can't satisfy everyone, and if you give them everything they want, they will be lost forever as they no longer have any need for a "god" to help them. And now they can insult you all they want since they don't need you and they don't care about anything. So, you kill them all. --Webdemon00 03:24, 10 September 2008 (EDT)
I've had the same bounty problem for the demented female Khajit to, but when I killed her, I still had 0 Bounty, but when I looted her for her books, since my charachter <3's reading I got the 1000 bounty. IDK why.I don't think it's too much of a problem, since you could just put away your stolen items and pay the fine off. The only thing it would probably affects is roleplaying, like a goodie-two-shoes charachter or soemthing. :/ --Rune Hunterz 12:06, 12 August 2009

Can't start quest[edit]

I can't start this quest! I spoke with some of citizens, but no entry appeared in journal. Has this quest any prerequisites?

Update: entering village I found that 1 citizens is dead (J'zidzo). He fallen from this mountain. One of Horvirs is also fallen, but as he's quest person, he alive.

How can I revive this quest? — Unsigned comment by 87.251.144.163 (talk) at 20:21 on 7 May 2007

Aye i had the same problem, and i cant seem to solve it. If you're playing on the PC version there is probably a console code available to sort it out, although i dont know it.--Willyhead 09:27, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
I went to Split and no one mentions anything about a counterpart they want to die. In fact, they smetimes talk to each other. Is it due to the fact that one of them might be dead ( or gone away) and how can I fix this (I have the xbox 360 version)? --User:Dan 14:55, 10 August 2007 (EDT)
I've had this myself and am trying to find out exactly what causes it. My current best guess is that if you've completed the main quest, you can't start that one. And there's no fix if you're on the xbox. --RpehTCE 17:52, 28 October 2007 (EDT)
I'm also having this problem...and yes, I've completed the Main Quest...I kinda figured the same thing, but if anyone comes up with a way to fix it, let me know!— Unsigned comment by 70.88.116.142 (talk) at 14:33 on 31 October 2007
I moved some of the previous comments from Shivering Talk:Glitches instead of having two separate discussions about the same topic.
If any resident of Split dies before the quest appears in your journal (i.e., before talking to one of the residents and hearing about it), then the quest is permanently disabled. This is true whether the resident dies at your hands, dies from an accident, or is killed by a creature. I don't think there is any way to fix it. When a resident dies, the script issues the command StopQuest SE46 which removes the quest from the list of available quests. If you're on the PC, you could try StartQuest SE46, but even if it works it's possible you'll run into subsequent problems because you can no longer kill all of the residents. --NepheleTalk 19:45, 3 November 2007 (EDT)
If any of them die, the quest can not be started, wether there the ones you get the quest from, or just one you have to kill. Illigx 16:52, 13 October 2008 (EDT)
I was actually able to start the quest after someone had died early on without my knowledge, but it's definitely not something I'd recommend for most people, as it required hex editing my saved game file and never being 100% certain that the game would be okay afterwards (though in fact, I never ran into any problems). The problem is that the way they've written the quest, it actually counts the number of times each person has died, rather than just asking if they're currently dead or not, so even if you resurrect the person, the quest still won't start. You need to set the death count to 0, which as far as I know, you can't do in-game, even through the console. I had to search for the person's ID in my saved game and then replace it with something "innocent" that wasn't quest-related. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 20:46, 13 October 2008 (EDT)

Reward[edit]

I don't think the gold amounts shown for reward are correct... I was over level 30 and only got 1000 gold for completing this quest. — Unsigned comment by 74.135.100.99 (talk) at 17:08 on 4 November 2007

The amounts are correct, but if I'm reading the scripts right, it's decided when you start the quest and not when you finish it. That might explain the disparity you found. --RpehTCE 14:53, 4 November 2007 (EST)
Actually, I believe that's buggy. My impression is that it's decided every time you play, so if you've installed Shivering Isles at a high level, you'll get the appropriate reward. If you start at level 1, then the reward will be updated, but the amount it's updated to is half of the amount listed on the page. My guess is that they changed the reward amounts along the way somewhere, but neglected to update them in all places. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 22:19, 13 May 2008 (EDT)
I just now did this quest at level 41 and only received 600 gold. I started and finished the quest and I was level 40 when I first entered the Shivering Isles for the first time.--Shugo Ookami 00:43, 9 June 2008 (EDT)
Yes, that matches with the script bug I mentioned. You get half the gold you should. Not that I would expect you to care by level 40, but if you're using a PC and you want the remaining gold, just use the console and enter player.additem F 600. It's my understanding that Mr. Kevvy has implemented a fix for this in the upcoming version of the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 02:04, 9 June 2008 (EDT)

Quest Stage Re-formatting[edit]

I was thinking of re-formatting the quest stage table to look like this, but while I think it looks much better in a large, wide-screen window, I'm not so sure if it's better or worse on smaller screens. Anybody have a second opinion?

The Great Divide (SE46)
Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry (siding with Mania) Journal Entry (siding with Dementia)
10 A resident of Split has told me I should speak to Horkvir Bear-Arm to help solve the problem of all the doubles in this town. There are two Horkvir Bear-Arms in town, so I can speak to either one.
12 The Demented Horkvir Bear-Arm has suggested I kill all the Manics in town. He'll reward me if I do.
13 The Manic Horkvir Bear-Arm has suggested I kill all the Demented in town. He'll reward me if I do.
15 I've agreed to kill all of the Manics living in Split.
16 I've agreed to kill all of the Demented in Split.
20 Horkvir Bear-Arm living on the Dementia side of Split is dead. Horkvir Bear-Arm living on the Mania side of Split is dead.
30 Jastira Nanus living on the Dementia side of Split is dead. Jastira Nanus living on the Mania side of Split is dead.
40 J'zidzo living on the Dementia side of Split is dead. J'zidzo living on the Mania side of Split is dead.
50 Atrabhi living on the Dementia side of Split is dead. Atrabhi living on the Mania side of Split is dead.
60 Urul gro-Agamph living on the Dementia side of Split is dead. Urul gro-Agamph living on the Mania side of Split is dead.
70 All of the Demented residents of Split are dead. I should return to Horkvir Bear-Arm for my reward. All of the Manic residents of Split are dead. I should return to Horkvir Bear-Arm for my reward.
200 Yes☑ Since all the Demented duplicates in Split are dead, Horkvir Bear-Arm gave me my reward. Since all the Manic duplicates in Split are dead, Horkvir Bear-Arm gave me my reward.
210 Yes☑ I've killed a resident of Split without reason. I will not be able to restore the balance here.
I killed one of the Manic residents of Split. I won't get rewarded for my efforts. I killed one of the Demented residents of Split. I won't get rewarded for my efforts.
I actually considered doing it that way, but opted not to for pretty much the reason you stated, that it would look awkward on smaller monitors. It looks fine to me, but I've got a pretty large screen. Other opinions needed. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:55, 5 August 2008 (EDT)
It looks fine (on this page at least) on a 1024x768 screen. Do we need to worry about lower resolutions nowadays? --Gaebrial 08:41, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
Well, the 800x600 crowd still has about 8% of the market, according to this. And trying this at 800x600, yeah, it does look kind of bad. Question is, though - is it worth still worrying about people who run on such a low res? (I'm guessing most of them aren't gamers if they're willing to accept such low res.) Anyone here have any objections? --TheRealLurlock Talk 10:20, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
Even people with higher resolution monitors sometimes choose to not have their browser at full size -- which is also a way to see how pages look at narrower widths.
And in my opinion, even shrinking my browser to half-width (~700 px or less), the side-by-side version of the table still seems clearer than the current version of the table. Yes, each of the entries wraps to more than one line. But the overall table length is shorter, and side-by-side still makes it easier to understand of the overall quest structure. So I'd vote for replacing the table with Robin Hood's side-by-side version. --NepheleTalk 11:22, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

Can "The Great Divide" be used to start the Dark Brotherhood quest-line?[edit]

Are your killings "observed by forces unknown"? I guess the question could apply to "Brithaur" as well.

Their killings count as murder, so that's a yes. --Timenn < talk > 11:11, 3 October 2008 (EDT)

UPDATE: I tested it: The murders were not noted as "observed", yet Lucien arrived after a nap. So "Yes".

Moved note[edit]

Note moved from article.
If you do the helping quests from Haskill after you become sheogorath where you have to protect split from attacks, then some of the villagers may be killed when, or before you even arive. You should do this after you complete the split quest.

Game Crash[edit]

My Game Crashes whenever I go anywhere near split. This really stinks because My stats are all maxed out and doing all of that work again would be horrible. Would anybody happen to know why it does this? — Unsigned comment by 69.249.142.64 (talk) on 24 April 2010

Best guess would be a scratched disk. Try cleaning it carefully. Next guess would be a corrupt datafile. Might be worth trying a reinstall - but make sure to be careful with your save games. rpeh •TCE 14:48, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
If your playing ps3 if the save game is over 4000 kb i think it was kb at least, it will start getting slow. In this case all you have to do is get rid of a lot of items that you dont really need that sleep for 3 days. Id suggest putting those items on corpses MikeTalk 14:32, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Falling damage[edit]

I removed the "bug" about not being able to finish this quest through falling damage. I cut the testing short by using the tcl console command, moving myself miles into the air, then using prid and moveto to move the NPC next to me before turning tcl back off again. The NPC plummeted to the ground, dying in the process. Their counterpart acknowledged the death, and Horkvir eventually declared the quest complete.

This meshes with the script, which sets a death flag for NPCs no matter how they were killed. rpeh •TCE 15:57, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Quest notify about citizen's death[edit]

The page tells that there is no warning when any of Split's citizens dies before starting the quest, but at least for me, I remember that I was doing the quest for Pyke and was near the entrance to the Fetid Grove (after recovering the medallion) and then surprise! A quest update stating that I've killed one of citizens without a reason, even if I haven't been in Split yet. Does anyone have encountered that too? - ZuTheSkunk 15:17, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

The description probably needs to be clarified slightly. You will be told about failing the quest any time after one of Split's citizens tells you to speak with Horkvir. Robin Hoodtalk 18:09, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Bugged quest/loc[edit]

I finished quest all good(killed Manics), but when I came to Split after some days later - all Dementias were dead for whatever reason x_x I mean, Split was empty, doors locked, etc. Ghost town 212.102.57.143 21:54, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
