Reynant Alciente is a Breton barrister present at the offices of Marsh & Ellerian in Old Ebonheart. He can clear bounties for 400 gold, but is initially preoccupied with a face from his past - former client Stabby-Jak Merrus. He will ask you to lure this individual away, in fear of suffering at Stabby-Jak's hands, beginning the events of A Criminal Lawyer.
He wears a common shirt, a pair of extravagant pants, and a pair of extravagant shoes. He carries a key to the living quarters of the office.
Aside from his natural bonus and resistance to magicka, and his ability to shield himself for short periods, he knows no spells.

Dialogue[edit]
- Greeting:
- "Mm, yes? May I help you?"
- Background:
- "I am %Name, solicitor and member of Marsh & Ellerian."
- defense for criminal proceedings:
- "I'm sorry, but I'm not taking on any new clients until a certain former client of mine is dealt with."
- "Got a price on your head -- so to speak? Whether your crime is petty theft or regicide, I'm your man, %PCName. For a fixed fee of 400 septims I will make your problems with the law simply vanish."
- Yes, clear my bounty.:
- "I'll get this filed away with the officials. Pleasure doing business with you, %PCName." (Bounty set to 0, and removed 400 gold from your inventory)
- (If you don't have the gold):
- "You don't have enough gold. I don't work for free, you know."
- (If your Bounty ≥ 5000):
- "Hold on, what have you been charged for? Ah, no, no, I'm sorry, %PCName. You've become much too notorious for my connections. Ahem. You'll have to leave. Now." Goodbye
- (If your Bounty = 0):
- "Don't waste my time, %PCName. You have no need of my services."
- Not now, thanks.:
- "Certainly. Just remember my name when you have the need!"
- lawyer:
- "Yes, yes. You DO know what those are, right? I don't want to explain the intricacies of Cyrodiil law to one more backwater native, if you please! It takes a lifetime of study, you know. Politics. Stroking the ego of a crowd. Collecting your dues at the end -- or preferably at the beginning. Very high stress work it is, oh yes."
- (If you are doing the Imperial Legion quest 'Judge and Jury'):
- merchant dispute:
- "I don't deal with trade law. Ask upstairs."
- (If you are doing the Tribunal Temple quest 'Outlandish Heresy' and haven't completed 'A Criminal Lawyer'):
- necromancy is legal in Old Ebonheart:
- "Look. I've got my own problems right now. An imporant business matter is preoccupying my mind."
- past client:
- "Honestly, I'm not sure if he was guilty of his accused crime. However, one doesn't get the nickname of "Stabby" without performing multiple acts of that nature, if you take my meaning!"
- Reynant Alciente:
- "Not my birth name, you understand. I think it has a nice ring to it, don't you?"
A Criminal Lawyer[edit]
- "Hello. %PCClass, I presume? Yes, yes, all very well and good. Excuse me, but I'm trying to concentrate on an important business matter here."
- "We shouldn't be seen speaking together. Please leave." Goodbye
- "I take it you managed to handle Stabby-Jak Merrus without getting stabbed. Am I still in need of protection?"
- "Ah, %PCName! Have you taken care of that little business matter I told you about?"
- (If Stabby-Jak Merrus is dead):
- "Stabby-Jak is no more! Thank Talos! And thank you, %PCName. You really saved my hide just now. I owe you a favor. I may be new around here, but I already know which strings to tug, if you're ever in need of defense for criminal proceedings."
- business matter:
- "I don't mean to be rude, but it is really no concern of yours. Ahem. Not that I wouldn't turn away help, of course. Ahem. Perhaps you could...?"
- What is it?:
- "I used to work as a lawyer in Cyrodiil. An unfortunate position that they don't appear to have much of here in Morrowind. I'm afraid my past is catching up with me, and I may be in need of protection from an old client of mine."
- Okay, sorry I asked.:
- "Quite so, quite so. If you please, I need to return to work now." Goodbye
- "Have you looked into the matter yet? Please do hurry."
- (If you failed to convince Stabby-Jak Merrus of Reynant's supposed location):
- "What you've said sounds hopeful. Maybe he took the hint. Perhaps I ought to--wait. Who's that?" (Stabby-Jak Merrus appears)
- Continue:
- "You fool! You led him right to me! Guards! Guards! Help, I'm being murdered!" Goodbye (Stabby-Jak starts attacking Reynant)
- (If you told Stabby-Jak Merrus of Reynant's true location):
- "You told him WHAT? He wants me dead, do you understand? Dead!" (Stabby-Jak Merrus appears)
- Continue:
- "You fool! You led him right to me! Guards! Guards! Help, I'm being murdered!" Goodbye (Stabby-Jak starts attacking Reynant)
- in need of protection:
- "I worked as a mob lawyer, do you understand? Meaning I swayed the legal system to keep those misguided men and women out of prison. Sometimes it doesn't work, of course. In this case, I'm afraid it didn't work at all. Dear, oh dear..."
- Get on with it already.:
- "I can see you're of the sort who isn't susceptible to being handled. Very well, %PCName, I will be blunt. My client has recently come out of prison and is planning to pay me a visit. Knowing his type, it will get violent."
- Continue:
- "As I said before, I am willing to do you a favor in the future, if you will intercept him for me. I know we're not in Cyrodiil, but all legal systems are the same when it comes down to it. I can grease your way out of future trouble if you help me out now."
- I'll do it.:
- "I have it all set up for you, so it should be easy. Take this letter and this gold. The gold is for bribery. The letter describes how I've moved my office to High Rock. Look for my past client on the docks. He goes by the name Stabby-Jak Merrus. I've received word he'll be coming in on a ship called the Niben's Wind." (You receive 100 gold and a Change of Location Notice)
- (If you have already met Stabby-Jak Merrus):
- "I have it all set up for you, so it should be easy. Take this letter and this gold. The gold is for bribery. The letter describes how I've moved my office to High Rock. Go back to Stabby-Jak and convince him I'm not here!" (You receive 100 gold and a Change of Location Notice)
- I've changed my mind. I'm not helping you.:
- "Blast you! No, don't go on. I have work to do, if I'm going to get out of here alive." Goodbye
- That doesn't sound good.:
- "It is, indeed, frightening! I'm sure you know how little control over their faculties some of these criminals possess! I just want to settle down and live a nice quiet life here in Morrowind, away from all the politics of Cyrodiil. Please, will you help me?" (See 'I'll do it' and 'Get on with it..' choices above)
- (If you already met Stabby-Jak Merrus):
- "I worked as a mob lawyer, do you understand? I swayed the legal system to keep those misguided men and women out of prison. Sometimes it doesn't work, of course. In this case, it didn't work at all." (See choices above)
- "Well? Is the matter settled?"
- (If you convinced Stabby-Jak Merrus of Reynant's supposed location):
- "He's gone? Thank the Nine. As promised, I now owe you a favor. If you need any defense for criminal proceedings, all you have to do is ask."
- my buddy:
- "Who? No, stop, don't walk away! Who told you to look for me?"
- Just some guy on the docks. He said he's an old friend of yours.:
- "I see. Pardon me for being overly suspicious, %PCName. I used to be in a very dangerous line of work, and I'm terrified it may someday catch up with me. If you'll excuse me, I have a business matter to attend to."
- He called himself Stabby-Jak Merrus.:
- "The very one! By the Nine! Are you certain? Oh, this isn't good. %PCName, do you think I could ask you a favor? I may be in need of protection."
- Reynant Alciente:
- "Yes, that's me. What's that? Who said something about being my buddy?"
