Aetherian Archive

The Firstmages were a group of powerful mages that resided in Aetherian Archive in Craglorn. Said to be unparalleled in the arcane arts, they began to occupy the tower in the First Era and it was here that they found the Great Source, which granted the Firstmages long lives. This allowed them to study indefinitely, and many of their magical experiments took place in the archive's upper floors.[1][2]

When the Celestial Mage arrived during the Interregnum, her very presence destroyed the Great Source. Many of the Firstmages entered her service as guardians and began to worship her, although a small minority avoided the upper floors in fear of their lives.[3][4] The Undaunted were made aware of the opening of the Archive, and flocked to the tower in an attempt to be the first to scale it. The Undaunted ascended the tower and fought through the Mage's guardians before defeating the Celestial herself in battle. [5]

Within the Aetherian Archive

At some point, the Mages Guild had placed arcane wards around the Aetherian Archive, the remnant of the "once-Great Source of knowledge and power", guarded by the fractured fraternity of the Firstmages, in order to prevent its misuse. In 2E 582, a rogue Mages Guild wizard that had been taught all he knew by Galerion himself, Brulo Rlane, cracked the wards the guild had placed around the Archive, and entered the tower hoping to claim the Great Source within for himself, thus threatening all of Tamriel. One of the Firstmages, Arnure, reached out to Galerion for aid in preventing Brulo from claiming the Great Source, something that would've caused a terrible calamity. Seeking to impede Galerion, Brulo opened planar breaches that unleashed a force to obstruct him, shadowy Daedric beings intended to keep him the Arch-Mage off balance. Galerion went to work on sealing the planar breaches, and cast a summoning spell that teleported the Vestige to the Archive, asking them to deal with the shadowy Daedra while he closed the rifts and confronted Brulo himself. The Vestige fought the shadow Daedra while Galerion closed the breaches and engaged Brulo in a magical duel. Eventually the Vestige defeated the conjured beings and the powerful Gloam Knight that was Brulo's final defense, while Galerion defeated his rogue apprentice. The victorious Galerion remarked that Nirn could sleep safe, not knowing the danger it faced that day. The pair than quickly departed from the tower, as the power of the Great-Source guarded by the Firstmages was too much for either the Vestige or Galerion to linger around long.[6][7]
