Shadow Knight Nassuphae, a Gloam Knight

Gloam Knights are wraith-like Daedra who are incapable of feeling sympathy but can feel hate. They are embodiments of mystery, and are sometimes referred to as "Shadows of Nocturnal".[1]:221 As such, they can often be found serving the Daedric Prince of Shadows.[2][3] Their physical form can vary, with one example of this including their number of arms numbering from between two to six.[4][5] Gloam Knights possess the ability to speak and wield magic.[3]

Mortals are sometimes transformed into Gloam Knights,[6] though these are "mock-daedra" different from true Gloam Knights.[7] One such example was Veya Releth, a champion of Nocturnal.[6]

They can also be summoned by conjurers,[8] and they can summon lesser shadow creatures themselves.[3] The Dark Lady's Headrest, a curio linked to Vaermina, is said to conjure dreadful nightmares, manifesting visions resembling Gloam Knights.[9] One such entity, Ansuul the Tormentor, appeared in the guise of a Gloam Knight. However, due to the illusionary and mutable nature of Vaermina's Omens, it is uncertain whether Ansuul was a Gloam Knight or merely took on that form.[10][11][nb 1]

Notes[edit]

^1 Omens are powerful Daedric servants of Vaermina, who enter people's dreams to influence them, driving them to make decisions they would otherwise consider poor or objectionable, even influencing their victims to murder those they love, incite bloody conflict, or betray those close to them. They can assume various shapes such as Watchers,[12][13] Dremora,[14] Wispmothers,[15] as well as disguise themselves as mortals.[16] As they dwell in dreams, they must be slain in their victim's dream in order to eject them from Nirn forever.[17][18] Ansuul shares many of the same properties as Omens, being a nightmare Daedra of Vaermina that resides in the mind and influences her victims from within.[10][19] Given the similarity, Ansuul might possibly be a type of powerful Omen.
