The Mask of Dagoth Ur, featuring a prominent Third Eye

The Third Eye (or Third-Eye) is a magical concept and symbol associated with seeing the past and future,[1][UOL 1] or the otherwise unseen.[2] Fortune tellers could be described as having "the third's eye fire".[UOL 1] Scholars believe that certain Deep Elf goggles augmented Dwemeri vision by adding an elevated third eye that added time-perspective to depth perception.[1] Some individuals wear a gemstone on their forehead that is known as a third eye.[3][4]

House Dagoth is heavily associated with the third eye, as they took it as their symbol.[UOL 2] Their sigil was that of a beetle with three circles on its back. Dagoth Ur wore a mask after his resurrection that featured a prominent third eye.[5][6] His seven Ash Vampire brethren also each possessed a third eye.[7] Dagoth Ur's followers regularly commented on his or their own "discerning eye",[8][9][10] and were known to have the third eye symbol on their palms.[UOL 2] Akulakhan was built with with a groove in its forehead that seeped blight,[11][UOL 3] though the Heart of Lorkhan was said to actually be its third eye.[UOL 3]

In ancient Khajiiti belief, Magrus was commonly known as the "Third Eye of Azurah", with Azurah having been said to have taken or received one of his eyes, which she used to make the Aether Prism.[12] In a text authored by Star-Queen Varalias, the fragmentary phrase "until Azura opens the Third Eye" is included in its section on the Star-Orphan Sheza-Rana.[13] The "Eye of Shalidor" or "Eye of Magnus" is a symbol sometimes used to represent a third eye. It is worn on circlets and hoods as a third eye,[UOL 4] and those who pass the final test during the trials of joining the College of Winterhold find Shalidor's eye marked across their brow.[14]

Trolls are a notable type of creature that possess a third eye nestled in their forehead.[15] Morachellis Hag-Husband, a legendary skald, once posited the idea that a troll's third eye might be attuned to the ethereal realm of spirits parallel to Nirn, rather than the mundane world. However, it's important to note that his views on the subject were not considered particularly reliable, as he made many other dubious claims.[2] The third eyes of ice trolls are sometimes mummified and repurposed as tough, leathery pouches for carrying small items.[16]

Notes[edit]

  • Ash Zombies had gaping holes in their foreheads where a third eye otherwise could have been,[17] with this being because their heads are said to have burst from "enlightenment".[UOL 2] In real-life, the opening of a third eye represents enlightenment.
