Jal is a Nord warrior who can be found in the forest to the east of Shor's Stand. She is a member of the Bear Hall and the daughter of Speaker Hialf. When she is first encountered, she will be injured after fighting the beast that has been terrorizing the settlement.

Quest-Related Events[edit]
After agreeing to help Britt the Bold with her diplomatic assignment, Speaker Hialf will ask you to deal with the Beast that has been terrorizing their settlement, in return for his support. Meeting with Britt in the forest, she reveals her plan to capture the beast instead and you begin tracking it by the trial of ashes it has left.
Following the path, you reach some trees and find a single woman lying against one:
- Britt the Bold: "A survivor! Unless she is the beast."
- Jal: "Gulruna? Wait. You're not from Shor's Stand."
Talk with Jal to find out what happened:
- "I'm not a beast. I'm here, same as you. To catch it. Ugh, this must be what father warned me about. Overconfidence. Ambition. They only get you hurt.
But I can't go back to the village. Not while it's still in danger." - What happened here?
- "The beast happened! We expected it to be on the ground, but the attack came from the treetops. Something snapped in the woods and then there was a noise. Deafening. Like thunder.
That's when we started hurling spears. It was mayhem." - Did you see the beast?
- "No. Just shadows from the flames it threw at us. Everyone else ran back to the Bear Hall. I stayed to hold it off. But I can't fight the beast anymore. Not in this condition.
Father is going to be so mad." - Is your father Speaker Hialf? He asked us to look for you.
- "My father already knows? Great. He wanted me to join the Hall of Feathers, but I don't care about music and dance. I want to protect people.
I tried my best. I fought the beast longer than anyone else. But I suppose it's your turn now. Good luck."
Talking to Jal again before going ahead to find the beast:
- "The beast is a real problem. But our village still stands. We faced bigger threats than this and we will face more in the future."
You catch sight of the beast on the trail leading upwards, and it is smaller than expected. After following it into the Glittering Cave, it is revealed to be a three-toed sloth wearing a Magicap. Britt is able to calm the sloth down while you take the hat. Afterward, you can return to the Bear Hall where you find Jal and Speaker Hialf talking:
- Speaker Hialf: "I don't care what you were doing! What if you died out there?"
- Jal: "I am not a coward, father. I do not run when things get dangerous!"
Talking to Jal before telling Speaker Hialf what happened:
- "You captured the beast, right? If it's still out there, my father will skin you alive.
Well, go on. Tell us what happened. We both need to hear it."
Telling Speaker Hialf about what happened, he says that he'll support the idea of allying with the Stirk Fellowship if you are telling the truth about the sloth. At this, Britt will arrive with the beast and Merchant Katul following her as proof.
Talking to Jal afterwards before Britt:
- "It's hard to believe that this little sloth is the beast that nearly killed me.
Father always says not to underestimate your opponent. Shor knows I won't forget that lesson now."
After winning Speaker Hialf over, it is time to talk to Speaker Frogirde.

- At the end of the quest, Speaker Hialf will say he will have Jal step up to lead Bear Hall while the speakers go to Sunport.
