The Beast is a three-toed sloth which has recently been inadvertently terrorizing the residents of Shor's Stand. This is because it somehow got its paws on Merchant Katul's magical hat, which has been reacting to its fear by casting Destruction magic and leaving a path of ashes in its wake.

Quest-Related Events[edit]
When you arrive in Shor's Stand, you may hear people talking about a beast that has been attacking people. This comes up again when you agree to help Britt the Bold with her diplomatic mission, when you talk to Speaker Hialf. He agrees to hear Britt out if you deal with the Beast. When you meet with Britt in the forest, she reveals her plan to capture the Beast rather than kill it as, "If we catch beast and bring to village alive? We look most impressive! See? Capture is harder than kill. Yes, this good plan."
Following the trail of ashes, you come across a large Curved Claw and find Jal, who gives her account of fighting the beast. At the start of the trail leading up the hill, you will catch your first sight of the beast, which Britt comments that it is quite small. When you approach it, the beast teleports away and scatters purple flames. You can follow the purple flames up to the entrance of the Glittering Cave. Once inside the cavern, it will startle and summon a Reef Guardian, you will need to fight it as Britt goes on ahead.
When you have defeated the guardian, you can follow Britt and finally catch up to the Beast, which is revealed to be a Three-Toed Sloth with a hat on its head:
- Britt the Bold: "Wait! Good beastlet, stay calm. No exploding us, yes?"
- <Britt the Bold slowly approaches the sloth.>
- Britt the Bold: "Friend, take sparkly hat! I have suspicions."
- <The Beast slowly reaches out one arm to Britt.>
Once you take the Magicap, the sloth will calm down:
- Britt the Bold: "And just like that, we turned beastlet into sloth!"
- <The Beast makes squeaking noises.>
After talking to Britt, you can return to Bear Hall and inform Speaker Hialf of what happened. When you do this, Britt will arrive with the Beast and Merchant Katul in tow:
- Merchant Katul: "My magicap! I thought it was lost forever!"
- <The Beast crawls forward, following Britt.>
- Britt the Bold: "Here you go, proof of your fearsomest beast! Now, I would like word with friend."
- Speaker Hjalf: "A sloth? We were terrorized by a sloth?"
Once you have spoken to Britt, the sloth will crawl over to the firepit to warm itself, making squeaking noises.
